Turkish Cypriots in North Cyprus
Turkish Cypriots are the Turkish inhabitants of the Mediterranean Island of Cyprus. This term is used to distinguish the native Turkish Cypriots from the Turkish immigrants who settled in the country in 1974. Northern Cyprus is home to the majority of Turkish Cypriots. A number of them found their permanence in the United States, Turkey, United Kingdom, Australia and North America.
Apart from the cultural reason of naming Turkish Cypriots as such, there is also a political rationale behind it. When the Turkish Cypriots emerged and was recognized, Greece would no longer dominate the part of the Mediterranean where the Turkish Cypriots thrive on. Today, the Turkish Cypriots are actively participating in both the country’s political and cultural issues, recognizing their right to their own heritage.
